Early Web Days in SF: Naming Craigslist and Building Products with Craig Newmark
While working in San Francisco Craig Newmark and I became friends while meeting on The Well message board. We started a small company called Digital Threads where we built the earliest websites using PERL. Craig had started a mailing list and I helped him. He credits me naming it Craigslist. Building a web app in 1994 changed my life.

I worked with Kevin Kelly for a year while serving as creative director for a digital agency TROON. We became the agency of record for Absolut Vodka and expanded their artist spotlight program for the web. We selected Kevin Kelly as our first artist and created “Absolut Kelly.” Throughout that year, I implemented Kevin’s ideas from his book “Out Of Control” into our interactive web project. His work made a lasting impact on my life and career.
During the Absolut Kelly project, I collaborated with Jeffrey Ventrella on genetic artwork that allowed website users to breed Absolut Vodka bottle art. Jeffrey’s innovative ideas left a lasting impression on me. These were the earliest generated images made on the Internet.
